Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing a $180 million plan to boost the quality of tap water across Michigan, from replacing lead pipes and school drinking fountains to combating chemicals that are contaminating public supplies and private wells.

It will help to implement tougher led-in-water rules, address contamination from chemicals known collectively as PFAS and give low-interest loans for infrastructure projects.

New rules promulgated or proposed for public water supplies update the provisions of the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act.  New rules are promulgated under authority conferred on the Director of EGLE by Section 5 of the Safe Drinking Water Act, 1976 PA 399, as amended (Act 399), identified as R 325.10101 through R 325.12820. Modified and new rules are published on the Michigan Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules (MOAHR) Rulemaking Process Summary,  Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act 399Michigan Safe Drinking Water Rules – Supplying Water to the Public.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Drinking Water and Environmental Health Division will hold three information meetings and public hearings in January 2020. The hearings will be held to receive public comments on proposed changes to the rules titled Supplying Water to the Public. Information on meetings and Hearing Agenda can be found on the Michigan.gov website.
