Lincoln was, after all, a man ahead of his time. Yet this meme is not only funny but very relevant in today’s world, where the excitement that so much information is now publically available online is tempered by the knowledge that much of that information is questionable and biased, if not completely false. Legal information is no different. While there are more legal resources available on the internet for free than ever before, how can a layperson determine which advice is trustworthy?
Attorneys are attempting to alleviate this problem in several different ways. Of course in their individual capacities lawyers can work to disseminate accurate information and correct mistaken statements. In a firm setting several lawyers can review proposed online content in order to assure accuracy. Even on a larger scale attorneys are working to ensure trustworthy information through their state bar associations and on a national scale. For example, the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan recently announced that they will be pairing with CloudLaw, an organization aimed at providing accurate legal information as well as localized recommendations for attorneys via their online platform cloudlawyers.com. By providing accurate information and several attorney profiles, state bar associations are working to create online content that is both reliable and easily accessible.
Keep in mind that no online source can replace a real attorney. Articles, no matter how long, can never be comprehensive. Online content cannot respond to the subtleties of your case and cannot consult with you about your unique goals. While a very good online article can perhaps point you to important issues, it is no substitute for reliable, personal legal services.
